Xenia Community Library Announces September Programs

Xenia, OH:  Exciting and fun programs for people of all ages are being planned at the Xenia Community Library, 76 East Market Street.

September Story Times

Preschool Story Time for ages 4-5 w/adult will be held at Xenia Community Library on Tue., Sep. 4, 11, 18, 25, from 10:30-11 a.m. Stories and fun

Toddler Story Time for ages 2-3 w/adult will be held at Xenia Community Library on Tue., Sep. 4, 11, 18, 25, from 10:30-11 a.m. Stories, songs, fingerplays, rhymes, and fun.

Stories, Songs & Stretches for ages 3-6 will be held at Xenia Community Library on Thu., Sep. 6, 13, 20, 27, from 1-1:45 p.m. This story time for 3-6 year olds will incorporate yoga-inspired movement to help build early literacy and physical literacy skills. In addition to stories, there will be lots of moving, singing, dancing, and fun!

Baby Story Time for ages 0-24 mos. w/adult will be held at Xenia Community Library on Fri., Sep. 7, 14, 21, 28, from 10:30-11 a.m. Short stories, songs, rhymes, and lap bounces.

September  Children’s Programs

LED Flashlight Creation for ages 5-12 will be held at Xenia Community Library’s Spark Place on Sat., Sep. 1, from 10 a.m.-noon. Using a jumbo craft stick, led, battery, binder clip, copper wire, and tape, you will learn basic circuitry to create your own flashlight! Registration required. Call 352-4000.

DIY Slime Stress Ball for ages 10-18 will be held at Xenia Community Library on Wed., Sep. 5, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Drop in to make slime. Then turn it into a stress ball to take home.

Sunflowers & Scarecrows will be held at Xenia Community Library on Mon., Sep. 10, from 4-5 p.m. Drop in and make a paper sunflower or scarecrow to take home.

Maker Friday will be held at Xenia Community Library on Fri., Sep. 14, from 3:30-5 p.m. Join us to explore different making techniques while we look at different technologies such as robots, LittleBits, SnapCircuits, and Squishy Circuits as well as non-tech making such as sewing, painting, or taping.

Electric Toy Cars for ages 10-18 will be held at Xenia Community Library’s Spark Place on Sat., Sep. 15, from 10 a.m.-noon. Make your own mini-electric toy car. Basic electrical soldering and hot glue guns will be utilized with a variety of parts to create a small car that runs with a 9 volt battery. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

Talk Like a Pirate Day will be held at Xenia Community Library on Wed., Sep. 19, from 4-5 p.m. Aaargh, mateys! Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day by joining us for piratical activities and fun.

Global Cardboard Challenge! will be held at Xenia Community Library on Fri., Sep. 21, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. What can you build with cardboard and a few simple building tools? Let your imagination run wild during this build-a-thon. Join other kids and teens around the world to create something cool with cardboard this September during the Global Cardboard Challenge. All supplies provided. For kids, teens, and families.

Hydraulic Arm Creation for ages 8-18 will be held at Xenia Community Library’s Spark Place on Sat., Sep. 22, from 10 a.m.-noon. Need to get a grip on things in life? Come to our robotic arm class! Learn the basics of robot movement and simple hydraulics by building a hydraulic arm using craft sticks. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

Paint with Watercolors will be held at Xenia Community Library on Wed., Sep. 26, from 4-5 p.m. We’ll provide watercolor paints and paper. Bring your creativity and create a masterpiece!

Pirate Fluxx for ages 10-18 will be held at Xenia Community Library on Thu., Sep. 13, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Talk Like a Pirate Day happens every September. Celebrate with us by playing a game of Pirate Fluxx. It is easy to learn yet the game is always changing!

Basic instruction in crochet will be provided as well as materials. Participants may start a scarf for the Red Scarf Project, which sends care packages to college-bound foster youth each Valentine’s Day, or make one to keep. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

Personalized Wooden Spoon for ages 12+ will be held at Xenia Community Library’s Spark Place on Sat., Sep. 29, from 10 a.m.-noon. Learn to use our laser cutter/engraver to laser etch a wooden spoon with a custom design. You will use Adobe Illustrator to design your image and then use the laser to etch it on a wooden spoon. September Adult Programs

Router 101 with Wooden Pumpkins for ages 18+ will be held at Xenia Community Library’s Spark Place on Sat., Sep. 1, from 10 a.m.-noon. Learn how to operate the CNC router to create your own wooden pumpkin décor. This project may require some finishing work to be done at home. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

But It’s All On The Internet for ages 18+ will be held at Xenia Community Library on Sat., Sep. 1, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Less than 10% of the information we need is on the Internet. That means homework! As Peggy Lauritzen will explain, the Internet is a wonderful tool for research, but it should not replace some of the tried-and-true methods for discovering our ancestors. Peggy is an Accredited Genealogist and has been involved in genealogy since she was a child. She is an instructor at Ancestry Academy and Family Tree University, and writes a column for Reminisce magazine. In 2018, she was awarded the title of Fellow of the Ohio Genealogical Society. This program is co-sponsored by the Greene County Room—Local History & Genealogy and the Greene County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society.

Medicare 101: An Overview of Medicare Benefits for ages 18+ will be held at Xenia Community Library on Wed., Sep. 5, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.  Please join us with Susan Allen (Greene County Council on Aging Benefits Specialist) for this important session to learn what options you have as a Medicare beneficiary, the process and timing for signing up for coverage, and what you can expect for your first year and subsequent open enrollment periods. All Occasion Card Class for ages 18+ will be held at Xenia Community Library on Mon., Sep. 17, from 5:30-7:45 p.m. Make a set of four blank cards that can be used for any occasion with a matching folder to hold them. Use yourself or give as a gift. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

Xenia Writers’ Group for ages 18+ will be held at Xenia Community Library on Tue., Sep. 11, 25, from 6-7:30 p.m. If you are a writer at heart, join us as we support each other in our writing endeavors. Bring a short writing sample for constructive feedback, if desired.

Block of the Month for ages 18+ will be held at Xenia Community Library on Wed., Sep. 12, from 3-5:15 p.m. and 5:30-7:45 p.m. The pattern “No Measure Bargello” will be taught on the second Wednesday of each month. Because it is a continuing program, it is important that you attend all sessions. The pattern takes a very difficult quilt design and makes it easy. You will complete a quilt top, learn how to sandwich a quilt together, machine quilt and bind it. All material will be provided for a lap size quilt. You will love the look and the easy way of creating such a stunning quilt. Please choose one of the two times the class is offered on this day. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

Xenia Book Club for ages 18+ will be held at Xenia Community Library on Fri., Sep. 14, from 10:15-11:15 a.m. Join a monthly book discussion. Everyone is welcome.
