Adding a Twist to Tradition
This time of year, for many of us, is about traditions. We come together with those we love to enjoy favorite foods and special recipes, share stories, and create new memories. It may seem impossible to still experience this, but with a bit of thought and some extra effort, it very possible.
Not being able to enjoy some of our holiday traditions as usual has actually created some new traditions. A number of seniors and family members have shared that as they have considered what they should or should not do this year, they have spent time on the phone, in e-mails and even on Zoom reminiscing about holidays past and telling others how much they are appreciated and missed.
Our time together is fleeting and so very precious. But it is easy to focus our energy on the many tasks we have on our list. This year, more than ever, we are realizing that instead of the tasks to be done or the items to acquire, our list should include the people with whom we want to connect and the stories and memories we want to make sure are heard.
We challenge you to use this holiday season and the months ahead to work on this very important list. As you write or type the names of those who are special to you and note some of the stories or bits of information you want to pass along or others have asked you about, know that you are on a list or two or three. And why not expand the twist, by inviting others to do the same? What a wonderful list this will be. It won’t cost a thing, other than some time, energy, and smiles. And what it will offer in return is sure to be priceless.
