How Chiropractic Helps Boost Immunity
There is a clear connection as to why chiropractic care can improve the function of the nervous system and body functions, but research is consistently working to show a clear connection between chiropractic care and the immune system.
How the Nervous and Immune Systems Work Together
The nervous system and immune system are hardwired to work together to create optimal responses for the body and interact with each other more often than you may think. Both systems release hormones and tiny messenger molecules that can communicate with each other and other organs in the body.
The nervous system relays information to the brain from the entire body and can directly influence receptors in the immune system. The brain has the ability to use nerve cells to communicate directly with the immune system and trigger an immune response, and vice versa. The immune system can send signals to the brain to let it know of any foreign, unwanted antigens. The brain can then tell the nervous system to react.
Some studies show increased levels of antibodies and other essential cells in the immune system following an adjustment. In some cases, patients who were sick with colds, sore throats, and sinus congestion reported accelerated recoveries after their adjustments.
The goal of chiropractic care is to remove any interference in the nervous system that may prevent you from natural day to day functions. This is because the nervous system controls the functions of your entire body. Adjustments on a specific inflamed area of the body reduces stress on the nervous system, allowing it to better communicate with the rest of the body. The better your nervous system can function and communicate, the better the rest of your body can function and communicate.
Hello my name is Dr. Mike Davis , Chiropractic Physician for 28 years.
Born in Springfield,Ohio raised in Madison County . Graduated from London High School, Clark State Community College University of Cincinnati and Life Chiropractic College.
I participate in Xenia community organizations including Xenia Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus.
My mission is to help patients understand how Chiropractic Care can reduce pain medication, avoid surgery and live a healthy life.
Weak Immune Systems
The nervous system, endocrine system and immune system are inextricably linked. Together they share tiny messenger molecules that mediate communication between them, creating optimal responses for the body to adapt and heal appropriately.
Until recently, one of these messenger molecules, IL-2, was thought of as an immune system molecule. But recent studies have clearly shown its presence and activity in the nervous system, leading researchers to believe that neural dysfunctions due to spinal misalignments are stressful to the body and can cause abnormal changes that lead to a poorly coordinated immune response.
Subluxation is the term for misalignments of the spine that cause compression and irritation of nerve pathways, affecting the body's organs. Subluxations are an example of physical nerve stress that affects neuronal control. According to researchers, such stressful conditions lead to altered measures of immune function and an increased susceptibility to a variety of diseases.
It's important to note here how the endocrine system also impacts the immune system by producing cortisol in the adrenal glands – endocrine glands that are directly connected to the nervous system through the sympathetic nervous system – a stress hormone that inhibits the immune system.
If the sympathetic nervous system is too "switched on" due to stress and subluxation, it can increase the adrenal glands' synthesis of cortisol, in turn affecting the immune system.
What Can a Doctor of Chiropractic Do?
Chiropractic care is the only way to detect and eliminate subluxation, and chiropractic adjustments have been shown to reduce the stress on the nervous system, thereby boosting the coordinated responses of the nervous and immune systems. One research group found that when an adjustment was applied to a subluxated area, the white blood cell count collected rose significantly.
Chiropractic and Your Childs Immune System
Strep throat, stomach bugs, colds, and viruses. This past winter and start to spring has definitely tested everyone's immune system.Did the thoughts of "not again" go through your mind as you were driving your child to the doctor's office? Was your child on one antibiotic after another? Did you ever think there might be an alternative?
For a child, this interference can be caused by damage to the spine by such events as birth, falls and injuries, sports injuries, heavy backpacks, and postural strain from sitting in a chair at school all day. If these small cumulative traumas and postural strains are left uncorrected, they can have far-reaching effects on a child's health.
Many still question how chiropractic care helps with health issues relating to a poorly functioning immune system. Since the nervous system directs the immune system and chiropractic care improves the function of the nervous system, the immune system can become more powerful. The results can be amazing.
The positive effect on the nervous system is the key in chiropractic care. The nervous system is the master system of the body and, under the guidance of the innate intelligence of the brain, runs all the other systems such as immunity, respiratory, cardiac, and digestion. In the pediatric patient, it is very important to note that this system also controls their growth, their development and their ability to process information coming in through their senses.
It is advised to seek chiropractic care as soon as possible. In a perfect world, every maternity ward would have a chiropractor to evaluate newborns for possible spinal trauma or stress. Many health conditions would never come to fruition if that occurred.
